The podcast, FLOSS Weekly, interviews one of the guys from PostGreSQL. I like the part where he talks about the philosophy difference between the MySQL and PostGreSQL. I think your points are valid I just don't think it is going to end. It just adapts. If something is going to kill Open Source it's not going to be companies making commercial version.
