Blog? What Blog?

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

OK, once again I haven’t been blogging much. I’ve been busy. But I have a lot coming up to blog about. I’ve been making plans for months to upgrade our server situation. Of course my budget is tight. I’ve been waiting on the final OK to spend the $1500 I wanted to spend and I finally got it. Yeah, $1500! Not much, but I’m trying to make the best of it.

So over the next week I’ve got several VM’s in VMWare to setup, and I’ll try to put some tutorials on here if anyone is interested.

Comprehense DR

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

As I’ve been working on our DR Plan I had some questions that just couldn’t be answered by IT.  I have an off site backup, but what do I do with the off site backup if the building and all our equipment isn’t here anymore because of a tornado?  Do I wait until the building is restored and we have new equipment?  Obviously that won’t work.  If nothing else, in such a case we would still need to process payroll, and all the data we would need to do this would be in the off-site backup.  So in a worst-case scenario we would need to setup some kind of temporary office, or setup a temporary off site server accessible via VPN.  And while we’re at it, what do we do about worship services.  I know this is outside my realm of responsibility, but I’ve assembled a team to compile a comprehensive DR plan that addresses regular business procedures, IT systems access, worship services, etc.

I was wondering if any of you other Church IT people out there have such a comprehensive DR plan, and if so what is your plan?
